2013 Torbreck Run Rig

Shiraz; Red Wine

2013 Torbreck Run Rig

Barossa Valley, South Australia

98+ WA; 96 WS
3 bottles available.
The 2013 Vintage was set up by low spring rainfall and a relatively volatile flowering period resulting in a low fruit set coming into the summer months. Vintage took place a month earlier than 2012 with most vineyards picked by the end of March – it was the earliest finish to vintage in living memory. Yields were generally below average but the overall quality was excellent providing rich colour along with a near perfect balance of acidity and tannin. Intense, lifted aromatics are released as soon as the wine is opened; dark cherry crème de cassis and hints of nutmeg all come to the fore with an underlying opulent fruit profile of black olive, cassis and plum. A dark, rich and silky palate with deep red cherry fruits, clove, lavender & licorice all interwoven with hints of sweet spice and cinnamon. The layers and diverse fruit characters continue to evolve in the glass with anise, hints of almond, earth, blackberry and pepper all becoming more apparent as the wine evolves in the glass. A rich, opulent RunRig 2013 will certainly reward those with patience.

Hunter Valley, New South Wales, Australia

Sound fruit and excellent ripeness. Typical mid density color meaning this is an elegant supple Graveyard Shiraz. The older, large format French oak integrates perfectly with sweetness and fine tannins. The fruit spectrum for Graveyard Shiraz is about red cherries and almost Pinot-like Campari notes. Medium bodied palate but with ripe tannins and a juicy acidity that will keep the wine in good stead for many years.

In 1915, an oak cask containing a blend of the finest tawnies the company possessed was set aside for the exclusive use of the Penfold family. This became known as 'the Grandfather' due to the great age of the oldest tawnies in the blend. Deep amber - mahogany in colour with the green gold tinges indicative of great age. The nose is extremely complex and fragrant, possessing an array of nutty, vanillin, aged characters melding seamlessly with hints of raisined fruit, malt and lifted spirit. The palate effortlessly displays the famed attributes of great Liqueur Tawny; luscious, rich and full flavoured with mouthfilling viscosity and a slightly dry finish. Intense raisined fruit, walnut and toffee flavours harmonise with subtle vanillin oak and rancio complexity before a remarkably long finish.

The vast wealth of this wine's varietal depth extends beyond the parameters of syrah - beckoning superlatives. Amazingly svelte in its balance of varietal depth with restrained power and super finely integrated extract, it is light on its feet and majestic once in focus. Overriding harmony meets an anarchical expression of Australian classic syrah. Lifted florals dance with rich meats, coffee, cola, chocolate, pan forte, turkish delight, graphite, bitumen, cigar tobacco, black cardamom, good quality soy sauce and crushed rocks. It is dense, yet creamy smooth.

2012 Penfolds Grange

Shiraz; Red Wine

2012 Penfolds Grange

Barossa Valley, South Australia

99 JH
3+ bottles available.
Fresh and re ned. Nervy. Red liquorice, gravy reduction avours and black olive tapenade to the fore. And then, just so much more! Where to start? Compelling depth - weighty/voluminous/ eshy - structurally complete and even throughout. A radiant inner sheen, yet still assertive – a lm encrusted with dusty, softened tannins that coat tongue. Great length. A loss of innocence, as sculptured oak (purity/clean) and a boundless array of red fruits, congeal into a darkened pool of (un)known and (un)savoury delights! Unashamedly and quite blatantly THE wine of this year’s Penfolds 2016 new releases! Enough said.
