BOEKENHOUTSKLOOF Franschhoek, South Africa "Once upon a time (in 1776 to be precise) a small farm known as Boekenhoutskloof was founded in the Franschhoek valley. As the name of the town suggests, the French Hugenots were the first people to settle and employ the ideal soils and Mediterranean climate for growing fine wine grapes -- top men in our books! In 1993 the farm and homestead was bought and immaculately restored by a partnership of enthusiasts committed to the future of South Africa. A new vineyard planting programme was established and now includes planting of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Grenache, Semillon and Viognier. We think you'll agree that we've done pretty well so far! For those enquiring minds out there, the direct translation of "Boekenhoutskloof" is 'ravine of the Boekenhout.' Boekenhout is pronounced Book-n-howed and a Boekenhout is an indigenous Cape Beech Tree that was greatly prized for furniture making. In fact, the chairs on our wine label pay tribute to the skills of the 18th century craftsmen and their endeavor in creating beauty from natural resources. A rather nifty parallel to the process of making wine, we thought." |
