WARWICK WINE ESTATE Stellenbosch, South Africa

In 1964 the farm was purchased by Stan & Norma Ratcliffe, at the time there was not a single vine on the farm. However, Stan and Norma Ratcliffe soon realized the potential of the terroir and began planting Cabernet Sauvignon. The Cabernet Sauvignon vines gave high quality grapes, which were soon in demand from wholesalers and other wineries. Norma became more and more interested in the making of wine and began to study the subject. Soon a cellar was in place and in 1984 the first Warwick vintage was released (a Cabernet Sauvignon). It seemed Norma had the talent for making great wines and production soon increased. The Trilogy, since 1986, a Bordeaux style blend soon became one of the flagships of the South African Wine Industry.

Winemaker's Notes
"65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc. The wine shows a wonderful intensity of fruit and warm mocha flavours. A sweet, perfumed luscious nose, which is earthy and provocative. Raspberry and blackberry flavours abound. There is a silky soft feel in the mouth with chocolate flavours on the palate. The wine has a very broad palate that lingers. Decanting while young will give more pleasure and aroma."

"91 pts ... Dense but supple with very suave, fine-grained structure holding together the black currant, fig and blackberry notes, while black tea, tobacco and iron notes fill in on the long finish. Drink now through 2011." --04/10
Winemaker's Notes
"Each component distinctly displays its own qualities. This vintage shows great ripe red and black berry flavors on the nose as well as Mocha flavors. The Pinotage is soft and sweet while the Merlot and Shiraz offers a subtle spiciness. The Cabernet Sauvignon is the backbone of the blend with well balanced, smooth tannins that will do well with cellaring. Full on the palate with good length on the finish. This blend brings the best of Pinotage to the classic French varieties."

"88 pts ... Fleshy but persistent, as sage, briar, black currant, braised fig and mineral notes show nice length. This shows a twinge of the grape's rusticity, but it's harnessed in the fruit." -- 02/10
Winemaker's Notes
"This wine has a garnet colour with an intense mix of berries and fruits on the nose. The sweet and fresh pallet compliments the intense nose of this medium bodied wine. The ripe fruit and spicy finish makes this a very accessible and balanced wine."
Technical Notes
"The grapes were hand harvested and fermented three quarters of the way on the skins after which it was pressed and left to finish fermentation in tank. The wines were then aged for 14 months in second and third fill 225L medium toast Never barrels. 14.5% alc."

"89 pts ... Lively, with a bright core of grapefruit and lemon peel notes backed by mouthwatering acidity. The long, floral-tinged finish lets it all linger. Very tasty. " -- 02/10
Winemaker's Notes
"The wine shows an abundance of tropical fruit, pear, grapefruit and lime aromas on the nose that carry through to the palette. The mouth feel is crisp, yet rich and fruity, and coats the pallet evenly. The well-balanced acid and lingering aftertaste will make you come back for more. "
Technical Notes
"The grapes where harvested at different levels of ripeness depending on fruit character, to ensure maximum fruitiness and complexity. The juice was handled reductively throughout the winemaking process and fermented very cold in specially designed stainless steel tanks. After fermentation the wine was kept on the gross lees for three month, blended and finally bottled in June 2009. 13.4% alc."
