2013 Leeuwin Art Series Shiraz
Margaret River, Western Australia

Intense dark red berries are already unwinding to deliver yummy long flavors with hints of dark chocolate, licorice and black pepper. Really enjoyable with cassoulet, grilled lamb, pork roast and chicken from the barbecue.

Winemaker's Notes
"Fragrant and lifted, the nose has density of fruit, balanced heightened floral notes, with complex spice and oak. Mulberries and blueberries feature with violets and rose petals. Asian five spice, caramel, vanilla bean and cocoa sit in the background. A finely woven palate that leads to opulent texture through the middle, finishing with generous length and carefully tuned tannins. Again, mulberries and blueberries are the key fruits, which are met with structural oak giving direction and carry. All elements are threaded with a bright and balanced line."
James Halliday
"96 pts ... 75% machine-harvested, 25% hand-picked, destemmed and whole bunch-fermented respectively with cultured yeast, matured for 18 months in French oak (53% new). Leeuwin took time to come to terms with its Shirazs, but is now master of its destiny. It has black cherry and plum flavours in superabundance, plus finely tuned tannins, its modest alcohol is the key. Drink through 2038."

2012 Tahbilk Shiraz
90 WA Australians know Tahbilk produces unique wines. The reds are comparatively reserved and a tad hard edged at the beginning of their lives but really reward the patient, and yes even a wine at this price is cellar worthy. This Shiraz shows us medium-bodied purple fruits, nice tannins, and more development potential, although we certainly wouldn't refuse to imbibe freely right away.
