2014 Hentley Farm The Stray Mongrel Grenache Shiraz Zinfandel
Barossa Valley, South Australia

Confessing a bias toward California Zinfandel, the small percentage in this essentially Grenache-Shiraz blend give it both a familiar touch and an exotic note. Medium-bodied and nicely meaty, the wine blossomed as it opened taking on more berry flavors balanced by some nice tannin. A terrific playing partner with a hearty green salad herbed up with sage, rosemary and red onion, and heaped with Italian salami, manchego, cannellini beans and fennel.

Winemaker's Notes
"Primary aromatics of strawberry and raspberry fill the nose and are complemented by spice aromatics of nutmeg, cinnamon and dried lavender. On the palate beautiful red fruits combine with earthy extended maceration tannins and a grenache derived spice."

Technical Notes
The majority of both Grenache and Shiraz parcels went through an extended maceration, with a total of 90 days on skins. The wines were pressed out to a combination of old French (90%) and American (10%) barrels where they underwent natural malolactic fermentation before being racked off lees and returned to oak to mature for a total of 8 months. 14.5% alc."

"94 pts ... A bits and pieces 58/38/4% blend of grenache, shiraz and zinfandel, picked and fermented separately. The red berry fruits of the grenache and darker fruits of the shiraz have come together very well, particularly with its fresh finish. All a bit mysterious how this happened."
