2012 Meli Carignan
Maule Valley, Chile

Happy surprise in a glass! Dark, dark fruits and black pepper dominate the fairly long flavors with hints of smoke and earth along the way. Throw pretty much anything on the grill and enjoy your evening.

Winemaker's Notes
"This lesser known varietal is planted extensively in southern France. Although it doesn't usually take a leading role, there's star power in Meli's Carignan with just 10% Cabernet Sauvignon blended in for depth and character. Aged in both used oak barrels and stainless steel, this wine is concentrated and unique, with an distinctive balance of earth and fruit."
Stephen Tanzer
"88 pts ...Dark purple. Ripe plum and blueberry on the deeply scented nose. Plush and supple in texture, offering gently sweet dark fruit flavors that pick up a spicy nuance with aeration. Finishes with gentle, late-arriving tannins, a hint of cracked pepper and good smoky persistence."
Wine and Spirits
"92 pts "Best Buy" ... Made from old vines planted in the 1960s, this takes a light, fresh approach, focused on fruit rather than pushing for superconcentration. With its pure, juicy ripe cherry flavor, it could bolster a plate of grilled sausages or develop for a few years in the cellar."
