"The key to Amon Ra Shiraz is balancing the fruit and tannin extraction, rather than maximising it. The fruit has such expression that we aim to preserve the characteristics of the vineyard rather than dominate them. Brilliant purple and opaque cherry hues. Lifted spicy blackberry florals on the nose with layers of earth, dark plum and espresso. The bright and brooding palate displays vibrant notes of dried spice, juicy cassis and black plum. Multilayered fine tannin and fresh acidity will afford this vintage the ability to age supremely over the long term."
"From 50-130 year old vines. Aged sixteen months in 100% new 95% French and 5% American hogsheads. 15.5% alc."
"96 pts ... Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2013 Amon Ra has youthfully toned-down notes of blackcurrants, blackberry preserves, plums and cracked pepper with nuances of licorice, dark chocolate, cedar and black earth. The palate has wonderful balance and elegance for its commendable concentration and fullness, with tons of muscular fruit and spice layers framed by grainy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing with great persistence. Drink 2017 - 2030."
