2014 Hentley Farm The Beauty Shiraz
Barossa Valley, South Australia
Lovely, lifted aromatics (no, we didn't peek at the winemaker's notes first) evoking raspberry and blackberry follow through on the long palate with some baking spice, white pepper, fine tannin, and oak as well. As with The Beast, plenty of air will enhance your current tippling.
$52.19 as part of a mixed case.
"Grown on the coolest block on the property and co-fermented with a touch of Viognier, the Beauty displays complex lifted aromatics, along with the softness and subtlety befitting a wine of this name. Complex perfume of apricot, passionfruit, quince, jasmine, plum and red berries – strawberry and raspberry. These aromas are emulated on the palate and supported by soft even tannins with a full mid palate and great length."
"Wet Viognier skins where added at the crusher at a rate of 3%. After an initial temperature spike 1/3 of the wine was sent to oak for fermentation off skins. The balance was chilled and returned over the skins where a minimal pump-over regime (1-2/day) was employed to ensure the softness of palate for which The Beauty is known. It was then basket pressed out to a combination of new (40%) and old French barrels where it underwent natural malolactic fermentation. A total of 18 months in oak."

$27.9994 JH Confessing a bias toward California Zinfandel, the small percentage in this essentially Grenache-Shiraz blend give it both a familiar touch and an exotic note. Medium-bodied and nicely meaty, the wine blossomed as it opened taking on more berry flavors balanced by some nice tannin. A terrific playing partner with a hearty green salad herbed up with sage, rosemary and red onion, and heaped with Italian salami, manchego, cannellini beans and fennel.
$84.9995 JH; 94 WS; 95 WA Aptly named, this wine is a powerhouse of inky, deep, and rich flavors including warm black fruits, 70% dark chocolate (nope, not 68%), oak, and balancing tannins. Certainly not for the faint of heart now, we imagine even greater satisfaction in the future. If you cannot wait to try a bottle - we couldn't - be sure to give it plenty of air.
