Wine Advocate
"91 pts ... The 2004 Shiraz “The McRae Wood”spent 17 months in predominantly American oak and was bottled unfiltered. It is a glass-coating inky purple with an expressive bouquet of pain grille, pepper, pencil lead, bacon, and blueberry. Intense, mouth-filling and structured, it will evolve for 3-5 years and drink well through 2020." -- 10/07
James Halliday
"95 pts ... Deep colour; abundant flavour fills the mouth; black fruits, licorice, dark chocolate, prune and plum. The tannins are excellent, fine and ripe, the oak well-handled; best for some years."
Winemaker's Notes
"Superb lifted nose of blackberry, licorice, vanilla and spice -- a great sniff. The palate delivers all that the nose promises and more. Superb ripe fruit flavors, with excellent weight and mouthfeel. Mouthfilling flavors of licorice, plum, cherry, vanilla and blackberry fill the mouth, followed by a long black pepper aftertaste. Perfect balance. Very long aftertaste of vanilla, plum, licorice, blackberry and spice."
Technical Notes
"One hundred percent estate grown. 17 months in 65% New American, 12% New French and 23% older American oaks. Acid 7.1 g/L; p.H. 3.44."
