"Quintessential Coonawarra Cabernet aromas here. Complex, fresh with black currant leaf notes, touch of mulberry and blackberry fruits and hints of licorice plus fragrant sweet cedar notes linger on the nose. The palate is multi-layered, generous and has a great balance of acid, fruit and tannin. Flavors of striking, rich berry characters, strong vanillin lead into smoky notes from the fine grained French oak which add length and depth to the finish. A wine from a great vintage due to the ideal weather, average yields and trouble free harvest."
"This wine is made with bottle age in mind and is a result of blending the best fruit from the ten blocks of Penley’s Cabernet. Components like clone, soil type, canopy, yield and irrigation all contribute to the wine style. In the winery, fermentation and careful oak maturation add to the grape characters and are the final touches in defining this wine. 75% of the wine was pressed out just prior to finishing the ferment then completing fermentation in oak. 25% was macerated on the skins post ferment for 18-25 days. Aged 20 months in 100% new French oak. 15% alc."
"95 pts ... Submerged cap header boards, matured for 21 months in French oak (86% new, the rest 1yo). Cassis, earth, mint, oak and tannins all contribute in one way or another to this powerful expression of Coonawarra; has a good future. Drink through 2037."
