"The nose is youthful and expressive with notes of blackberry and blueberry and with hints of earth and charcuterie. The palate is intense yet still restrained and shows an elegant expression of dark fruit with layers of berry, spice and smoked meat flavors. The wine is generous and long with excellent texture and a harmonious structure. Eligo will age well for at least fifteen years under proper cellaring conditions."
"Crafted from a selection of the finest blocks of old-vine Shiraz each vintage, Eligo represents John'sunparalleled knowledge of Barossa's terrior and fruit. Traditional, low-intervention winemakingtechniques ensure that this flagship wine is full of finesse and character. Submerged-capfermentation takes place in small, stainless steel fermenters with a small portion undergoingextended maceration for up to two weeks to maximize color and flavor extraction. Eligo isaged in 100% French oak hogsheads, with 75% being new, for a period of 20 months. This seductive Shiraz represents the pinnacle of John's winemaking skill. 14.5% alc."
"97+ pts ... Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2012 Eligo has a profoundly scented nose of crème de cassis, blackberry pie, licorice, dark chocolate and blueberry preserves against an earthy/meaty background of bacon fat, forest floor, beef dripping and black loam. The densely packed, full-bodied palate manages almost paradoxical elegance and restraint with velvety tannins and lively acid giving closure to the long, multilayered finish."
"96 pts ... It's deceptive how firm and well scaffolded this wine is. It's a flood of rich, ripe, dark- hearted fruit, all blackberry and anise, peppercorn and coffee, and it feels so fluid that at first you barely notice the tannin at all. It's only on closer investigation (all in the line of duty) that you start to notice the strings. It can be consumed now or much later; it will take either option in its stride."
