2007 Altos Las Hormigas Vista Flores Malbec Single Vineyard
Mendoza, Argentina

If you like red meat or incredibly hearty vegetable dishes, this is your perfect go-with. Age-giving balance and integration show happily in this rich, deep, and dark fruit flavored Malbec. A little tannic punch will assist in excellent pairings with filet, ribs, steak, and chops, roasted or grilled, herbed up or with just a little pepper. Give it a whirl before it gets dark at the barbecue by dinner time!

Winemaker's Notes
"Complex and intriguing, this deep colored 2007 has a bold personality and represents the site-specific characteristics of Vista Flores. The intensity of the aromatic profile is characterized by notes of red and black fruits, followed by subtle notes of violets and spice. The fruit and florals follow through on the palate, ending in a crescendo of violets, minerality, and the spiciness of well-integrated oak. The texture is firm and round with an elegant tannic structure and a lasting finish. The persistent finish, multiple layers and constant evolution in your glass reflects the strong identity of this wine."

Technical Notes
"The grapes go through a double selection process and are released by gravity into stainless steel tanks for pre-fermentation maceration at 5C for 7 days. Then the alcoholic fermentation begins with indigenous yeasts at 24C for 15 days. In this wine, pumping is not used; the cap is rotated by manual pigeage throughout the fermentation, and once this is completed, post-fermentation maceration begins for 4 days. Then the wine goes in to new barrels of French oak, where malolactic fermentation and then ageing takes place for up to 36 months. 15% alc."
Wine Spectator
"93 pts ... Concentrated and polished, this dark red exhibits a deep well of macerated blackberry, cassis and plum skin notes supported by full yet fine-grained tannins and ample acidity, which keeps the long, licorice- and mineral-accented finish moving. Drink through 2017." --10/12

Stephen Tanzer
"91(+?) pts ... Bright, saturated ruby. Deep, pure but youthfully imploded aromas of blackberry, bitter chocolate, violet, minerals and licorice. Thick and dense but tightly wound, showing an incredibly primary dark fruit character in light of its extended elevage. This youthfully firm-edged wine's tannic spine calls for at least another three to five years of patience; it should last for a decade or two. Showing less early sweetness than the 2006 version, but I like its floral lift on the back end." --03/13
