2011 Kumeu River Coddington Chardonnay
Kumeu, New Zealand
As with each of the Kumeu Chardonnays, the Coddington has wonderful balance. It tends toward a creamier style while totally avoiding too much flab and butter. Pairs well with dishes incorporating toasted nuts or sweet spices such as nutmeg, cinnamon, or five-spice powder, mushrooms, squash, and avocado, and of course most shellfish.

"The 2011 Coddington shows the typical ripe, peachy fruit expected from this vineyard site. Due to a small cropping level, there is depth and layers of concentration present in the wine. The palate is forward with a luxurious, creamy texture and lovely balancing acidity. Although clearly delicious in its youth, this wine will benefit from a period of bottle maturation of two to five years."
"Hand-harvested, whole-bunch pressed, indigenous yeast fermentation. 100% barrel fermentation, 100% maloactic fermentation, 11 months barrel maturation."
"92+ pts ... The 2011 Coddington Chardonnay entices with a nose of apricots, pink grapefruit and toasted almonds accented by hints of ginger and mace. Tightly knit at this youthful stage, the medium-bodied palate gives a wonderful intensity of citrus and spicy stone fruit flavors, plus a refreshing burst of acidity through a long finish."--10/13
"90 pts ... Bright lemon-yellow. Ripe aromas of peach, fresh hazelnut and spicy oak. In a fat, glyceral style but with a solid spine of acidity to give shape to the wine's creamy, peachy middle. Tightens up considerably on the back end, finishing classically dry and more austere than the Estate bottling, but still with excellent breadth. This needs a couple years in bottle to absorb its CO2 and express itself more fully." --09/14
