2009 Man O' War Chardonnay
Waiheke Island, New Zealand

Spoiler alert --- this is no butterball Chardonnay. This lovely wine is all about minerality from the use, primarily, of stainless steel to the absence of malolactic fermentation. Think pie dough, nuts, lees, wet rocks, and a most delicious quaff.

Winemaker's Notes
"Aromas of sweetcrust pastry and fresh apple are balanced with the scent of a freshly struck matchstick. The palate has imposing concentration with refined acidity and a serious structure finishing with pleasantgrapefruit characters."

Technical Notes
"Hand harvested with selections taken from multiple passes through our elevated hillside vineyards. Whole bunch pressed to tank with static settling for clear juice. Racked off solids and allowed to go through a wild fermentation in a mixture of old seasoned barrels and 70% in stainless steel tank. The wines stayed on yeast lees throughout the winter with no stirring prior to the addition of sulphur dioxide in the Spring to prevent any Malolactic fermentation to take place."
Wine Advocate
"88 pts ... Man O' War's 2009 Chardonnay displays pronounced aromas of apricot, apple tart, crumbled hazelnuts, struck match and a touch of crushed stones. Full bodied and concentrated with crisp acid and a long finish, this is a seductively opulent style that's gorgeous for short to medium term drinking, best consumed now through 2013."
