2009 Chilcas Red One
Maule Valley, Chile

Abundant bright red fruit and a bit of oak and vanilla highlight the good, long flavors. Mushroom dishes, legumes, grains, lamb, duck, chicken, beef, loads of herbs or just salt and pepper, you name it and it will pretty much go.

Winemaker's Notes
"The 2009 Red One has intense aromas of red and black fruit aromas against a backdrop of subtle black pepper, toasted coffee, and chocolate notes. Cocoa characters emerge on the palate and intermingle with the fruit to add great complexity to this voluminous red blend with a pronounced persistence, lush tannins, and an elegant mouthfeel."

Technical Notes
"50% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Franc, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Malbec, 2% Petit Verdot. The grapes were hand-picked in mid-April and immediately transported to the winery for sorting and gentle de-stemming. Next, the fruit was cold macerated for four days followed by a warm ferment lasting four to five weeks and punch downs took place three to four times daily. The wine matured for 12-14 months in French oak barrels, 33% new. 14% alc."
Stephen Tanzer
"90 pts ... Opaque ruby. Sexy, oak-spiced aromas of cherry and cassis, with notes of licorice and vanilla building with air. Lush and creamy on entry, offering sweet dark fruit compote flavors and gentle spiciness. Turns tighter on the finish, which lingers with very good smoky persistence, leaving cherry-vanilla and anise notes behind."

Wine Enthusiast
"90 pts ... This red blend has characteristics of late-harvested grapes from a cool year. Aromas of prune and blueberry are cool and mellow but not lifted. The palate is smooth, with blackberry, baked plum and chocolate flavors."
