2010 Mendel Lunta Malbec 2010 Mendel Lunta Malbec
90 WA

This is no hit you in the face Malbec. It is medium-bodied and pleasantly restrained. We get both aromas and flavors of brown spices, earth, and purple fruits. Fabulous with pork, lamb, hamburgers, and grilled veggies or mushroom dishes.

"Intense fruity aromas of raspberry, plum, blackberry and cassis immediately greet you upon first sniff. These explosive fruit notes continue on the palate of this light-bodied, easy to drink Malbec. Soft tannins give way to a long finish making this wine enjoyable on its own or paired with roast pork or lamb spareribs."

2010 Mapema Malbec 2010 Mapema Malbec
New Vintage! '09 91 WS

One of a few Malbecs you might sip happily on its own while you prepare the skirt steak and mole sauce, perhaps some hard cheeses, or that fabulous brown rice, mushroom and merguez lamb dish you read about last month.

"Intense purple color with shades of violet. Heady aromas of kirsch, cocoa, mint and exotic woods make you want to keep inhaling deeply. Red & black cherry flavors coat the palate, and the oak tannins frame the intense fruit flavors, keeping them from taking over the place! This Malbec is as good on the second day as it is on the first—if you can avoid finishing it! It is a great example of “cool weather” Malbec—it has all the spicy/fruity character of the grape, but it also has a deeper, more serious side. Best with meats such as pork (grilled or roasted loin), grilled hamburgers or steaks, and lamb prepared any way you like."

Those crazy high altitude vineyards produce crazy good wines. Clean and wonderfully acidic, we also taste rich dark plum and dark dark chocolate. Pair this with equally acidic foods such as olives, dried meats, ham, meats flavored by a vinegar based marinade, or even salads.

"One of the most memorable locations in Salta - it is literally high enough to be in the clouds on some days. The pure air and water at this altitude allow Jose to make wines exactly as he intends -- fragrant and balanced. Ripe fruit flavors of plums and blackberry. The earthy appeal makes for a fairly rustic, yet versatile wine."

Figs, dark fruit, a hint of licorice. Dona Paula does no wrong. Well Dona Paula doesn't really do anything; the winemaker David Bonomi and the viticulturist Edgardo del Popolo do most of the work.

2010 Crios de Susana Balbo Malbec 2010 Crios de Susana Balbo Malbec
New Vintage! '09 90 pts WA

Full-bodied, dark red and purple fruits with spice and weight. Fabulous with summer barbeques and winter stews.

"The wine has a beautiful reddish/purple color as most good Malbecs do. The aromas are a mix of freshly crushed black cherries and toasty/smoky oak-- just enough to frame the exuberant fruit. On the palate, the flavors of cherries and spice are obvious, and the jammy fruit quality just keeps coming on strong, with hints of spice and sandalwood lurking in the background. This is a wine that you'll want to buy by the case because it can be consumed at almost any occasion, whether at a fancy dinner party, or just curled up on the couch in front of a movie. Fun and delicious-- what more can you ask for?!"

2010 Coquena Malbec 2010 Coquena Malbec
88 WA

Good thing the Coquena wines are remarkably yummy because their corks suck - bright neon plastic, you won't lose the bottle in the dark. But as we were saying, this is another high altitude delight from Salta. Riper than the Finca Las Nubes, this Malbec is a tad spicy and just as uniquely acidic. Try roasting pieces of butternut squash with a schmear of olive oil, then drizzle with aged balsamic before serving with ham or roasted pork and, of course, the Coquena.

"The black fruit and plum flavors are dense and ripe. The body is medium with good structure and spicy fruit flavors that linger in the mouth."

2010 Catena Zapata Malbec 2010 Catena Zapata Malbec

Rich and earthy. Think mocha and fig newtons, without the newtons of course. Really good now and for the next few years as well.

"The 2010 Catena Malbec shows a deep violet color with purple tones. The nose offers concentrated aromas of ripe red and dark fruits with delicate floral notes like violets and lavender, and traces of vanilla and mocha. The mouthfeel is rich and concentrated, with blueberry and blackberry notes and a touch of leather and cinnamon. The finish presents well-integrated tannins with bright acidity and a flinty minerality that gives the wine exceptional length."

2010 Benmarco Malbec 2010 Benmarco Malbec
90 WA

Substantial dark red fruit and power, really nice. A little Bonarda in the mix probably enhances the bright fruit flavors. Barbeque anyone?

"Beautiful deep purple color with perfumed aromas of ripe red fruits and roasted coffee beans. It is lush, fullbodied and penetrating on the palate with loads of chewy, currant jam flavors, bright acidity, and a touch of grip on the almost savory finish. This wine really unfolds with some air so try not to slurp it down in a rush, and it shows why the Argentine people are in love with Malbec. Some Bonarda was blended in for greater complexity and to achieve better balance. Pairs well with a wide range of foods including beef, sausages, spiced or grilled pork, veal, medium-strong cheeses, and meat-based pasta sauces."

2010 Altocedro Malbec La Consulta Reserva 2010 Altocedro Malbec La Consulta Reserva
New Vintage!

Unctuous. Does that mean what we think? Full, dense, dark, long, juicy, and you should really try this wine. All that in one word. Carry on.

"85% Malbec, 15% Tempranillo aged for 12 months in oak, deeply saturated blue-purple color attests to the wine's power and concentration, and the flavor is pure ripe berry, plum, with a nuance of sweet tobacco. The tannins are rounded, lingering generously into a rich mouth-filling finish."
